DIY! Homemade Organic Body Butter Recipe

Hey All! Some of you may recall my former website, “Hebrew Essence” and that I used to make and sell handmade, organic body care products in farmer’s markets and local grocers in Arizona! Since beginning my natural living transition towards the end of 2007, I’ve experimented with many homemade skin and body care recipes. While I discontinued the product line, I still make most of our bathroom products from scratch.

My skin care motto is, “What You Put on Your Body, You Should Be Able to Put in Your Body!”

The skin is our largest organ system and as our body's outer protective layer it absorbs and digests (Yes, digests!) everything we put on it. That being said, can you imagine how sick a person would be if they downed a bottle of lotion with sulfates, fragrances, parabens, and a host of other potentially toxic ingredients? Why should we allow our skin to absorb and digest those ingredients if we wouldn’t dare consume them?

Today, I’ve made a batch of body butter with organic mango butter, extra virgin olive oil, lemon grass essential oil, and rosemary essential oil. The butter takes a similar consistency to coconut oil because it is solid at cooler temperatures and softer at warmer temperatures. Unlike lotions and mineral oils, your body knows what to do with this type of moisturizer. It may not taste well, but it is technically edible. It absorbs quickly and moisturizes well. The recipe is below!

Measurements are approximate; you can add more butter and less oil for a more solid result and increase or decrease the amount of essential oil depending on your scent preferences. My finished product has a very light smell. Lemongrass can be overpowering, so you may want to add it slowly and test it on your skin before adding more.

Homemade, Organic Body Butter

6-10 Ounces Organic Mango Butter (Shea, Cocoa, or any other natural butter will do)

1-2 Cups Extra Virgin Olive Oil

12 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil

6-12 Drops Lemongrass Essential Oil

Create a “double boiler” using a glass jar or bowl (pictured below). No need to purchase an expensive double boiler.

Place butter in the glass jar and use low heat to melt it to liquid form. Stir often as it is heated. Never boil.

Once your butter is melted, add the olive oil and stir well.

Carefully remove the mixture from heat and add your essential oils. Mix well.

Store the mixture in a sealed glass jar. It will take almost an entire day for the mixture to cool and settle. I prefer to speed up the process by placing my butter in the freezer for an hour or so. Watch carefully, you don’t want it to freeze!
