Many studios and instructors prefer a more traditional sound selection – opting for quiet music, instrumentals, and tracks with specific vibrations and frequencies programmed into them. I prefer to play music a little louder in class and often go with non-traditional selections for lack of a better phrase.
We are naturally drawn to the things that heal us if and when we are actively seeking them. The classes I lead are mostly centered on slow, intentional movements and grounding asana. All of the things that allow one to pull into his or her body and become aware of the sensations of the body in a safe space – one of the most powerful ways to heal from trauma of any sort according to Bessel van der Kolk M.D. author of The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma. So I intentionally listen to music that brings up intense emotions during my practice to learn to navigate through them with greater ease.
That being said here are some of the songs I’ve been listening to during my practice and some of my favorites for class…
